Living on the shore
Leading a life so sheltered
Living on the shore
With freedom unfettered

Leading a life so easy
Couldn’t ask for more
Leading a life so easy
Could never imagine being torn

High on the surface
Leading a life with no thought to flee
High on the surface
With still the world to see

***

Running through the dark
Life and family lost
This will surely leave a mark
Can never repay the cost

Old life alight
Can never go back
Can never break through the fright
Never rebuild what I now lack

This darkness engulfing ‘til the end
Can’t seem to find a way
Never could foresee this new bend
Life now on the sway

Last speck of light fades away
This must be it for me
Won’t live to see another day
This is what will surely be

***

Nobody told me everything’s a lie
Nobody told me unreachable is the sky
Nobody told me this is the end
Nobody told me it’s all pretend
Nobody told me it’s all a fake
Nobody told me there was nothing there for me to take
Nobody told me the truth isn’t fact
Nobody told me it’s all an act
Nobody told me this isn’t real
Nobody told it’s wrong to feel
Nobody told me

***

If this the end
Why am I still here?

If this is the end
Why can I still steer?

It can’t be over
I’ve found my way

It can’t be over
This is gonna be my day

I can do this
I can get through

I can do this
I’m gonna man my own crew

If this is the end
I’ll turn it around

If this is the end
Then a new beginning will be found

***

I have the power I have control
Now it’s their turn to cower in fear of my patrol

I have the power I have control
Now it’s their final hour that I’ll unroll

I have the power I have control
Once they took my flower but I’ve found a new heart life and soul

I have the power I have control
I’ll make them wish they’d jumped from the tower at sight of my weakest foal

I have the power I have control
Now they’ll pay for what they did
All those years ago by the shoal

***

Lost
Tumbling amid the darkness
Lost
Once again come to this

Fallen
Grasping blindly for something to hold onto
Fallen
Blindly is all I can manage; don’t know what to do

Blind
Lost all direction
Blind
Now forever in need of eternal correction

Lost
Tumbling amid the darkness
Lost
Once again come to this

***

I feel like a caged animal
With all the space in the world to wander about
Like a caged animal
With every appliance to let me out
Caged like an animal
With all the freedom I could ever need
I feel like a caged animal
With the ability to follow my own lead
Like a caged animal
With the ability to be as solid as a rock
I feel like a caged animal
With total control over key and lock
I am a caged animal

“So this is what the end looks like?” To know was a need
“This is what the end looks like,” the general agreed
short prose piece consisting entirely of poems here's a summary in case you can't tell:

1st poem.) introduction. a kid lives on a beach and has as close to a perfect life as he can imagine

2nd poem.) his house is burned down and he runs away to escape death

3rd poem.) the kid is basically questioning life and hating it

4th poem.) he overcomes the tragedy and begins rebuilding his life

5th poem.) the kid becomes the commander of a very powerful army and is set on revenge

6th poem.) his life is once again destroyed, presumably by the same people

7th poem.) he is lost again and though there are no physical limits on him or anything like that he feels 'captured'

8th poem.) the kid (although not so much a kid anymore) conversing with one of those who followed him during his rise to power

:iconthewrittenrevolution:
Does each individual poem have enough power and emotion to make it meaningful? Does the story overall have enough power and emotion? Is the story clear and easy to follow? (I mean is it easy to follow without looking at my above description. Can you tell what's going on just by reading the poems?)

EDIT: Made some changes to the second to last poem (I feel like a caged animal) I put some variation in the repeating lines
